Book 1 of the Warrior's Trilogy

Elias is no ordinary elf. A giant amongst his kind, he dwarfs notonly his fellow elves but the taller, stronger humans as well. Cast outby his own kind, he was sent to live amongst the Northmen at a youngage, learning their ways and culture, but never wholly accepted by them. When his oldest friend, King Brynjar, dies in his old age, Elias'sposition among the volatile men of the Northlands becomes tenuous, andhe sets out to make his place in the world.

Far to the south, a war is brewing between his homeland of Lonwick, and the demonic Felle, an army of orcs, ogres, trolls, and men. Shouldhe stay to the north and avoid the conflict, or should he travel southand join the forces that are defending his homeland? Who is the shadowydark knight that hunts him? And will he ever find people in this worldthat see him for who he is, and not the freak he appears to be?

From the warm, forested slopes of coastal mountain ranges, to thetropical shores of exotic islands, author Brandon Cornwell leads us onan adventure filled with battles, magic, love, and loss. As Elias facesthe journey before him, rich characters and vivid settings transport usinto a world that feels as real as it does fantastical.

If an Oregonian loves The Goonies because they recognize the places they know in the film, I love this book because I recognize places in Northern California from Brandon's writing. As a tabletop gamer, I appreciate that he never used tedious blunt force description to identify "races" or "stats". Little things like describing coffee indirectly (pg 31) enriches the unique world Brandon is creating. The Mystery Attacker is the first big question to tickle a reader's brain (pg 14). Mercenary men of the middle ages would have had simple ways to honor their dead comrades, and I appreciate the relevant dirge sung by the leader (pg 40). This changed the flavor of the narrative, and adds further depth to the realm. I'd enjoy more of these in future volumes. Great use of foreshadowing "gems" (pg 49).
The hot and bothered depictions were surprising in their detail, but did not adversely affect the story. I actually thought of John Cameron's Avatar and chuckled at one point. Blueness seems to be hot.
Complaints about the coitus seem to confirm the phenomenon that our culture is in the dissonant position that it is okay to read about cleaving people in two and crushing bodies with rocks, but if you write about the natural enjoyment of sex and pleasure, somehow that is inappropriate. Those are mainly on pg 101 & 105. You're welcome. ;)

Rising Thunder Dynasty of Storms Brandon Cornwell 9781520994208 Books Reviews

A good story a bit dark at times. But a good start to a series. Will be interesting to see how the storyline balances out.
An enjoyable read that leaves me wanting more. It was a little predictable, but still managed a few surprises. It was a little darker than it appears based off the cover and selling description.
My main issues are with the main character’s lack of social skills. He spent 80+ years living in a royal castle and yet hasn’t developed the ability to sense people’s motivations. Yes, he’s an elf and develops slower, but that slowly?
I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
4.5/5 stars. The book was good, it has all the classic fantasy elements one might expect, and started off as simple enough and straight forward. The characters were interesting, but it was really the story that pulled me in. Every time I thought I knew where the story was headed something unexpected happened that got me more and more interested in where the story was going. I'm very interested in seeing where the series goes and will buy the next book as soon as it's published. A fun read that I would recommend to anyone.
In all honesty, I did not expect this book to be good. I bought it because I liked the cover. I am very happy to be so wrong. At first the plot is barely visible and as you read you become confused for a bit since the characters appear to be flat, but then I realize it was an elf coming of age story; then it all made sense again. Love the characters and I am now invested $$$$$$$ in them. Hahahahaha!!! Kudos to the writer.
There was a lot that I expected out of a fantasy story but not everything; certainly enough to keep interest. The pacing was good, nothing lingering too long to test my attention span. The world itself, as well as the story, were intriguing and the book made me want to know more about them. Once the last page was done, I was most definitely wanting to know the rest of the story.
Fanstastic start to a series by a new voice on the scene. Devoured this book in about 2 days, and I’m starting the next one as soon as I’m done typing this.
Nice dark fantasy vibe with an easily understood main character gives this book a good sense of identity and sets it apart from the other “blah” fantasy tripe I see so often.
I’m looking forward to reading this guy’s stories for however long he cranks them out. Great job, sir, and keep up the good work!
The characters were well fleshed out. I liked them and I cared about what happened to them. The plot was more than interesting enough to hold my attention from the beginning, with great descriptions and details. The story itself is good enough to stand on its own, let alone be the intro to a great trilogy. I definitely would recommend this book.
